Jean-François C.

When I left my bike for repair at Cycles Fleury, I slipped a word about QuartiersNord to the boss. He discussed it with his staff, and then sent me an e-mail suggesting that I speak to Jean-François when I would come back to the store to pick-up my bike. JF and I actually had a good conversation at that time.

JF is a native of Québec City, but grew up in suburban Montreal. He lived, among other places, in Laval and St-Eustache, with a detour to Brussels where his father worked for two years, and later on in Gatineau. He began studying photo in Ottawa at the turn of the millennium, when digital had not yet clearly supplanted film photo. However, he abandoned the program because of the cost of equipment. He later completed a Diploma of Vocational Studies in institutional cooking at Centre Relais de la Lièvre in Buckingham, and then worked in restaurants in that area and in Montreal. Having partied a little too much during his passage in the restaurant business, he does not seem far from considering it today as a den of vice!

He arrived in Ahuntsic in 2005, an area he enjoys for its tranquility. Around 2008, he knocked on the door of Cycles Fleury to offer his photographic services. The owner of the time was looking for an employee and when he saw that JF was could handle bike mechanics, he immediately hired him. He said that this job had helped put him back on the right path, nothing less. The job, however, is gradually becoming a sideline for him. In 2011, he began a bachelor of education which he completed this spring. He still has to comply with certain administrative formalities in order to move from substitute to regular teaching in high school. The specialty to which he is dedicated is nowadays called the Social Universe program. This is the jargon of the hour for History, Geography and Contemporary World Study. Drawing on his background to help students, he intends to work with photos and comics to carry out various learning situations.

JF also had the opportunity to make an internship in Benin in Africa, as part of a Canada World Youth program. He told me with a mixture of amusement and pride that people came to hear him as if he was a specialist in pedagogy.

He still has a passion for cycling. On the Monday after my visit, a day off for him, he was planning a ride. He also said a good word about Julien, the new owner of Cycles Fleury for two years now. Julien has democratized the bike offer of the shop, which gives JF better tools to advise customers according to their personal resources.

A full-time teaching position would now be welcome. He and his girlfriend from Mexico City, Rocio, are parents of a baby girl named Sophie.

Michel Olivier G., Anie-Pascale R. and their children

When I started this project, I had no preconceived ideas about the type of people I would meet. It was rather a desire to reach out to fellow citizens from different horizons that motivated me. It is in this spirit that I approached a young family enjoying ice cream on the benches of Fleury Street East on a sidewalk sales weekend. I introduced myself to them, looking for their eventual agreement, in the same manner I would have with other anonymous passersby seeming to have a little time for a chat and pictures.

The dark sunglasses of the parents, Michel and Olivier Anie Pascale, should probably have given me a hint about them. Perhaps some of you, more familiar with television productions than I am, would have recognized them. They are both career actors and both part of the distribution of popular series. I admit that I felt a little embarrassed to confess to them my ignorance about their achievements! Modestly, they hadn’t told me more. After a simple WEB query upon my return home, I found out that they have held several prominent roles in theater, in cinema and on TV. Anie Pascale is even a finalist for a Gémeau Award at the Gala to be held in September 2015!

Michel Olivier grew up in St-Sulpice district where his family lived until he turned 7 or 8 years old. He attended the Louis-Colin school. Today, he and Anie Pascale live in Ahuntsic with their children Clara-Rose and Rafaël.

I thank them all for their time and wish the parents a long presence on our screens.

The family on Fleury Street East

Sophie T., David H. & Jayden

I met Sophie, Jacob and their son Jayden on Fleury Street East during the Promenade Fleury sidewalk sale. It was Jayden who first caught my attention that Sunday. He seemed to be enthralled by the musical performance of the guitar-voice duo formed by Clement Courtois and Julie Perron. As they were standing quietly, all three together, showing no sign of hurry at all, I approached them to ask for a few minutes of their time and the permission to take a photo.

Jacob is a native of Shawinigan, Sophie of St-Hyacinthe. They have been living in the Sault-au-Récollet district for two years. For Sophie, Fleury Street was the route of frequent walks during the period of her maternity leave. She appreciates the street for its activity.

Although they like the neighborhood, they will soon leave. The arrival of their child has prompted them to move to St-Hyacinthe to be closer to family members and become homeowners at an affordable cost.

Jacob and Sophie are creative young entrepreneurs. They are the founders of Productions 540, a company that describes itself as "the specialists of video, events and social media." You can learn more about them on their site: productions540.ca.

Jayden seems ready to follow the footsteps of his parents on the road of technology. After the little family had posed for me, he showed a great interest for my camera. I handed it to him, pointing it at my face so that he could take his first picture.

But no, I will not show that one!
